William Trevor was an Irish novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1928. He began writing as a teenager and published his first novel, The Old Boys, in 1964.

Trevor's work is known for its psychological depth, its exploration of Irish history and society, and its use of evocative language. He has been compared to Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, and Edna O'Brien.

Trevor won numerous awards for his writing, including the Whitbread Novel Award, the Booker Prize, and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. He was knighted in 2002 and died in 2016.
