Massive Attack is one of the most innovative and influential bands in electronic music history. Their unique blend of trip hop, dub, and soul has earned them critical acclaim and a global following. But beyond their music, Massive Attack is also a band with a fascinating and enigmatic history.
In his new book, "Out of the Comfort Zone," journalist and music critic John Robb takes us on a journey into the world of Massive Attack. From their early days in Bristol to their global success, Robb tells the story of a band that has always pushed the boundaries of music and defied expectations.
Through interviews with the band members, their collaborators, and their fans, Robb paints a vivid picture of Massive Attack's creative process. He explores the influences that have shaped their music, from dub reggae to hip hop, and he examines the band's commitment to social and political activism.
"Out of the Comfort Zone" is a must-read for any fan of Massive Attack. It is also a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of electronic music and the creative process behind some of the most groundbreaking music of our time.
In the Beginning
Massive Attack was formed in Bristol, England, in 1988. The band's original lineup consisted of Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles. Del Naja and Marshall had previously been members of the Wild Bunch, a Bristol-based sound system. Vowles was a DJ and producer who had worked with a number of local artists.
The band's early sound was heavily influenced by dub reggae and hip hop. Their first album, "Blue Lines," was released in 1991 and was a critical and commercial success. The album featured the hit singles "Unfinished Sympathy" and "Safe from Harm."
Trip Hop Pioneers
Massive Attack is often credited with being one of the pioneers of trip hop. Trip hop is a genre of electronic music that combines elements of hip hop, dub, and soul. Trip hop is typically characterized by its slow tempos, atmospheric soundscapes, and introspective lyrics.
Massive Attack's second album, "Protection," was released in 1994 and further cemented the band's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential bands in electronic music. The album featured the hit singles "Protection" and "Karmacoma."
Global Success
Massive Attack's third album, "Mezzanine," was released in 1998 and was a global commercial success. The album featured the hit singles "Teardrop" and "Angel." "Mezzanine" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album.
Massive Attack has continued to release critically acclaimed albums and singles throughout their career. Their most recent album, "Heligoland," was released in 2010.
Social and Political Activism
Massive Attack has always been a band with a strong social conscience. Their music often tackles issues such as racism, poverty, and war. The band has also been involved in a number of social and political campaigns.
In 1997, Massive Attack released the single "Superpredators" to protest the British government's "tough on crime" policies. The band also performed at the Stop the War Coalition's march in London in 2003.
Legacy
Massive Attack is one of the most influential bands in electronic music history. Their music has been praised for its originality, innovation, and emotional depth. The band has also been lauded for its social and political activism.
Massive Attack's legacy is likely to continue for many years to come. Their music will continue to inspire and challenge listeners, and their commitment to social and political activism will continue to make a difference in the world.
