The novel begins in the small town of Willow Creek, Ohio, where brothers Billy and Tommy are preparing to graduate from high school. Billy is the older brother, and he is a star athlete and popular with his classmates. Tommy is the younger brother, and he is more shy and reserved. Despite their differences, the two brothers are very close.
However, their close relationship is put to the test when Billy is drafted into the Army and sent to Vietnam. Tommy is devastated by his brother's departure, and he vows to do everything he can to support him. He writes to Billy every day, and he sends him care packages filled with food and other items that he knows his brother will need.
Billy's letters home are full of stories about the war. He writes about the fighting, the camaraderie between the soldiers, and the fear of death. Tommy reads Billy's letters with a heavy heart, and he worries about his brother's safety. He knows that Billy is in danger, but he also knows that his brother is ng what he believes is right.
As the war rages on, the brothers become more and more distant. Billy is hardened by the fighting, and he becomes less and less like the boy that Tommy remembers. Tommy, on the other hand, becomes more and more withdrawn. He spends most of his time alone, and he avoids contact with the outside world.
Eventually, Billy is killed in action. Tommy is devastated by his brother's death, and he is unable to cope with his grief. He drops out of school, and he starts drinking heavily. He loses all interest in life, and he becomes a shadow of his former self.
Years later, Tommy is still haunted by his brother's death. He is unable to move on with his life, and he is filled with guilt and shame. He knows that he could have done more to help his brother, and he cannot forgive himself for not being there for him.
One day, Tommy receives a letter from a woman who claims to have known Billy in Vietnam. The woman tells Tommy that Billy was a hero, and that he saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. Tommy is touched by the woman's letter, and he begins to feel a sense of pride in his brother. He realizes that Billy died a hero, and that he should be remembered as a hero.
Tommy decides to write a book about his brother. He wants to share Billy's story with the world, and he wants to help others to understand the cost of war. He knows that writing the book will be a difficult and painful process, but he is determined to do it. He owes it to his brother, and he owes it to himself.
